The Precious Pachyderm An Evangeline Adams Mystery Volume 1 Karen Christino 9780972511735 Books

Loved this mystery. it's fun, well written, and features engaging characters. The astrological advice the characters give and receive in the story is right on the money as well, but you'd don't have to know much about astrology to enjoy it.

Evangeline Addams was an important figure in the world of modern astrology and both her influence and work exert an influence these many decades later. I suggest you buy and read this book- then , if you like it, get hold of a copy of the same author's well researched biography of Ms. Adams, and you'll gain a renewed appreciation for how good a job Ms. Christino did, recreating the voice and personality of a real life astral adventuress in the pages of this period piece mystery (early 20th century). I'm hoping for a second mystery in this series.

I wrote a much more detailed review of this book in the Winter 2016 issue of the NCGR Journal, a publication geared toward contemporary astrological practitioners. Adams was a world famous astrologer, writer, teacher and a successful business woman who pioneered the first mass market astrological publishing venture. Like her fictional doppleganger in The Precious Pachyderm , she probably would have been someone fun to know!

The Precious Pachyderm An Evangeline Adams Mystery Volume 1 Karen Christino 9780972511735 Books Reviews

I just read a really good book — The Precious Pachyderm by Karen Christino, Book One in the Evangeline Adams Mystery series. Let me tell you a little about it.

The main character, Evangeline Adams, is an actual historical figure, a real-life astrologer. (To learn how Author Karen Christino chose Adams as the subject of her mystery novel, read her blog post "How Evangeline Adams Became a Detective.") Christino mentions other historical figures in The Precious Pachyderm, such as Florence (Mrs Warren G) Harding, Charles Schwab, Will Rogers, and Coco Chanel. I enjoyed the addition of history to the mystery.

The plot is entertaining and clever, and made me feel like I was really there. The engaging characters captured my attention right away. I look forward to reading more about her world, as I continue with The Evangeline Adams Mystery series.

I recommend The Precious Pachyderm to anyone looking for a great historical cozy. I really enjoyed The Precious Pachyderm by Karen Christino, and bestow upon it Five Stars!

Note I received a complimentary copy of The Precious Pachyderm, and voluntarily reviewed it. All opinions shared are 100% my own.

Readers’ Comments
‘Well plotted; sort of a cosy mystery. Fun trying to work out who did it. Cover very off-putting.’ Male reader, aged 26
‘Interesting story. I loved the setting. This author’s excellent at describing Manhattan in the 1920s. Tons of mystery and lots of rather odd characters. Agatha Christie would like it.’ Female reader, aged 63
‘Evangeline Adams is a superb character for this story. Th plot meandered like a river here and there, but I did enjoy it.’ Male reader, aged 34
‘The author’s knowledge of the central character is impressive. Forget the dodgy purple cover and enjoy! Vibrant setting and a clever mystery.’ Female reader, aged 70
‘I suspect this author knows her history. Excellent descriptions of the clothing and life of the day. Oddly, it’s the title that’s most off-putting. It’s too clever; most readers won’t know what it means.’ Male reader, aged 68

‘A thoroughly enjoyable mystery. A Red Ribbon winner and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
astrology and mystery. famous astrologer evangeline adams is the chief character and her assistant, mary, is the sleuth. lots of interesting characters and evocative of the late twenties.
Karen's an authority on Evangeline Adams, I have the biograhy she wrote on EA. I emailed her and she said Evangeline really did collect elephants which I find charming. As the interweaving of fact and fiction. Her realization of the character and voice are delightful,.
This book was a bit of a change from what I normally read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the characters and the research the author must have done on the life of the famous Evangeline Adams and the world and time period in which she lived. It was a charming, engaging book with a wonderful surprise and twist at the end. I hope this is the first in a series because I'd love to read more from this author!
Karen Christino has written a fascinating novel set in the 1920’s, a time when famous astrologer, Evangeline Adams, gave consultations to celebrities in her Carnegie Hall studio. When a valuable ruby elephant disappears, Adams’ two assistants set out to solve the mystery. Mixing fact and fiction, with informative astrological tidbits thrown in along the way, “The Precious Pachyderm” is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed and found hard to put down..
Loved this mystery. it's fun, well written, and features engaging characters. The astrological advice the characters give and receive in the story is right on the money as well, but you'd don't have to know much about astrology to enjoy it.
